Wow. Where to even start with this one? This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. This book took hold of my heart and soul and refused to let go until I had finished it.

This review will not contain spoilers but will contain a description of the plot.

This book centers around Addie LaRue, a girl who makes a deal with the devil so that she can never be chained down by other people. This deal goes wrong when the devil, with his endless trickery, makes it so that she can live 1000 lifetimes and never be remembered by a single person in anyone.

So where to begin? This book has a wonderful writing style. The descriptions and details form such an elaborate and beautiful story that it feels unforgettable and timeless. Addie LaRue’s sorrow is embedded into every word. These sentences feel less like sentences and more like lyrics or prose in the way each feels so carefully thought out and strung together.

The characters are all so well-formed. Though we don’t get to fully meet many, on account of nobody remembering Addie, the ones we do meet are well-developed and interesting. These characters feel so raw and real and though this book does have unrealistic elements, every character feels like someone you could just encounter on the street. Even if the other characters were flat and boring, Addie herself is so deep and raw that I could read an entire book centered around her alone.

Every once and a while you will encounter a book that leaves such a deep and lasting impression on you that you will never forget it. This was that book for me. The themes and messages were so well delivered as we heard the story of a girl who sold her soul in a dance with the devil that would last 300 years.

The other main character in this story is the darkness, the devil, the one and only Lucifer, or as Addie calls him, Luc. He, being the one who cursed Addie, is the one who remembers her. They spend time together as the years blur into one and Luc finds himself entranced by her,  but Addie continues to live her life free of chains to keep her down.

Addie, despite nobody remembering her, still leaves an impression on the world, finding her way into the inspiration for some of the most popular mysterious artworks and songs as people find themselves remembering meeting someone, but unable to remember who it was.

Addie LaRue finally gets her happy ending (don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you) and the book comes to a close with some of the best finishing lines of any book ever.

I truly cannot think of a negative thing to say about this book. If you have ever considered reading it even once, please do. I hope it changes your life the way it has changed mine.

Happy Reading,

Ashley
