Best Books to Read on Spring Break/Summer Vacation

1. It Happened One Summer

It Happened One Summer is the perfect book to read on a beach or a long car drive.

This book centers around Piper, who is a spoiled diva living in Las Angeles. One day, she parties a bit too hard and her mother and stepfather decide to send her to the small town where her father grew up. She hates it. She is forced to stay in a dirty, unfurnished room, and the whole town smells like fish. Piper is confident that her summer is ruined. But in this small town of Westport, there is one person she can’t escape. Brendan. He is a fisherman who Piper keeps running into all over town. Brendan thinks Piper is a spoiled brat, and Piper thinks Brendan should mind his own business, but a begrudging relationship builds between the two. When the summer ends, Piper is left wondering. Does she even want to go back to LA?

This book would be a wonderful read for anybody looking for a cute romance with a little more depth.

2. The Summer I Turned Pretty

While I didn’t personally enjoy this book, many people do, so I thought it was worth including on this list. It is a summer vacation romance with a love triangle and lots of pining. It is also part of a series, so if you really enjoy it, rest assured that there is more to the story.

This book tells the story of Belly, who only really lives in the summers when she can go down to the beach and stay with her family and friends. But this year Belly is older. She has matured, and so have her feelings toward the two boys she stays with, Conrad and Jeremiah. Their mother, Suzannah is also acting strange, and Belly is certain she is hiding something.

If this sounds appealing to you, it would be the perfect read for a relaxing spring break trip.

3. The Selection

While not technically set in summer, this book carries a similar ‘vacation read’ tone. This book, however, is set in a dystopian society, adding an extra level of escapism to your reading this spring/summer.

In this book, we are introduced to America Singer. She has unfortunately been born into a lower caste society and lives in a very poor family. Her whole life changes when she is chosen to compete in the Selection, an event that is held to pick a bride for the prince, in which girls from each caste are chosen to compete. America is upset and makes little effort in her competition, refusing to wear the fancy dresses and the nice smiles that the other girls do. This, however, only makes her more appealing to the prince in question, Maxon, who is also not fond of the Selection and its principles. America plays herself up for the cameras and tries to get along with the other girls, but in private, she and Maxon grow closer. An unexpected guest from America’s past threatens to pull them apart, and America is faced with a tough question. Is she even pretending to compete for Maxon’s attention, or is it real? With rebel voices growing louder outside the palace walls, America and Maxon must make some very difficult decisions, for the good of the kingdom.

This book is perfect for anyone looking to get away from our real world and dive headfirst into the world you can only find in books.

4. Fourth Wing

I know by now everyone has heard of this book, but it really is the perfect book to read on vacation this year. This book is a fantasy, set in a completely different universe, and will be part of a five-book series, of which three are currently published.

In this book, we follow the story of Violet, a girl who has always wanted to be a scribe like her father but is forced to enter Basgiath War College, a school for training people to be dragon riders. Violet must pass a series of dangerous tests and figure out where her true alliances lie as she learns things she never knew and becomes someone she never thought she could be. War looms on the horizon, and to make matters worse, Violet keeps accidentally being different, first with her dragons, then with her signet, the magical ability that is gifted to a rider by their dragon.

This book has an amazing plot and an enemies-to-lovers romance with amazing characters and impeccable worldbuilding.

This book is perfect for a beach read or to read during downtime this summer.

5. Anna and the French Kiss

Anna and the French Kiss is the perfect book to round off this list. It centers around a girl named Anna who is sent against her will to the School of America in Paris. Despite her reluctance to go, she sees the wonders of Paris and meets some incredible people and her mind starts to change. But then, she starts developing feelings for her friend. Even worse, he’s taken! But when she starts to wonder if the feelings are reciprocated, things get dicey. This book is honestly one of the most fun books I’ve ever read. I’ve done countless rereads and it keeps me wanting to read it again and again.

This book is the perfect light and fluffy romance for your trip this year.
