Sunrise on the Reaping was one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve read recently. This is the long-awaited Hunger Games book that centers around one of the victors from the main series, Haymitch.
The main reason this book was so jaw-dropping to me was because of all the parallels. This book includes many familiar names of people who you may know an older version of. It also lets you in on even more Capitol propaganda and fully shows you the amount of deceit the Capitol goes through to maintain control over the population.
This is the second quarter quell, meaning there are twice as many tributes, which means twice as many people to get connected to only to later get your heart broken over. The characters in this book have so much depth and are so well developed that every character with any mention more than just a name will end up being someone you feel attached to later on.
This game was extra exciting because the arena is full of things that aren’t what they appear, and full of some intense and heartbreaking deaths in some of the most gruesome ways we’ve seen thus far in the Hunger Games series.
This book also explains more about the Covey and more about why older Haymitch is the way he is, and why he has some of the *ahem* habits he does.
It also adds so much more emotion to the original series, as you can see that Katniss is the one he truly has been waiting for, as he himself had tried to outsmart the Capitol at their own game and failed.
This book was so well written and contains many parallels to the other books in the series, and according to some, the current political climate in the USA, but I’ll leave that interpretation up to you.
This book was heartbreaking, invigorating, and kept me engaged the whole time. Needless to say, it fully deserves its five stars. Based on the fact that I was thinking about it for days afterward, it probably even deserves more than that.
Maybe it’s just because the main trilogy already did the worldbuilding, but I think this was the best book in the Hunger Games series. If Suzanne Collins ever releases another one, you’ll catch me at the bookstore the second it opens.
I truly cannot urge you enough to read this book. I hope that after hearing what I have to say, you will go read it for yourself. I hope you enjoy.
Happy Reading,
Ashley
